How to Keep Your Car Rust Free.
If you live in the snow belt, you’re likely familiar with the yellow and green lights on the plow trucks as they dump salt and dirt on the roads.
While we all can appreciate the trucks during a blizzard, our vehicles do not appreciate the corrosive qualities of the ice melters. Salty water is splashed all over your vehicle, getting trapped in all the nooks and crannies. Are there any ways we can protect our vehicles?
Frequent Car Washes
Washing your car regularly keeps the grime and crud from building up and solidifying. If you can, find a good touchless car wash and visit weekly, ideally at the end of the week if you’re not planning to travel. That way your car gets to sit for the weekend without the destructive salt eating away at it. The best washes are the ones with the underbody sprayers.
2. Park under cover
If possible, it is advantageous to park in a garage or carport. Keeping the car dry slows the oxidation process. Trees are not good cover, they shed acorns and drop branches which could cause more damage and rust.
3. Rust Prevention Products
A very effective proofing process which involves spraying oil based products to the backside of the body panels. This fluid has very low viscosity and is able to seep into seams and protect even the tiniest of crevices where rust is most likely to start. You can DIY or have this done professionally. The access to the backside of the panel is achieved by drilling a small hole in a low profile part of the panel, or the interior trim panels are removed.
